Forschungsprojekt ::
Post-Platonic Dialogue: Examination and Reconsideration of Evidence

Projektbeschreibung

The project focuses on the ancient genre of dialogue and its development and transformation after mid-fourth century BCE down to the end of the Hellenistic period and complements her previous work on dialogue in the Classical period (Plato, Xenophon) and in the imperial times (Plutarch, Dio Chrysostom). Evidence of composition of dialogues from the Hellenistic period is scanty; texts are usually fragmentary, anonymous, difficult to date and interpret. The aim of the project is to carefully gather and examine available pieces of evidence: fragments and testimonies of philosophers of various schools, so-called pseudo-Platonic dialogues (i.e. dialogues which have been preserved alongside Plato’s dialogues, but their style or contents indicates that they were not written by Plato), and dialogues preserved on papyri.
